The enigmatic Pauline, first child of Victor and Mathilde Kahn, was born in Paris in 1854 and in 1856 migrated to Liverpool with her parents and little brother Arthur.
Pauline’s biography is short. The 1861 census mentions her and the rest of the family residing at 78 Elizabeth Street, Liverpool. She is lost in the 1871 census, but a Pauline Kahn born in Paris and of the right age pops up in a USA census of 1880.
Therein, she’s living in Manhatten and is described as single and living with a Straus family, the father of which was born in Bavaria and the mother in France. The family had two young children, but we have no way of knowing whether Pauline was working in the USA, or visiting relations-cum-friends.
In the 1881 census she was back in the bosom of her own family at 15 Crown Street, Liverpool. She was unmarried and her occupation described as ‘housekeeper.’
Pauline died in 2Q 1886 in Liverpool (8b 126). As far as we know, she never married.
Straus is probably not an uncommon name, but perhaps somebody knows of the family and would be able to furnish information to help us discover more about Pauline? That’s what we call a ‘long shot’ but they do sometimes pay off. contactus@kahngene.org.uk
