In 2000 Professor Aubrey Newman of Leicester University produced a paper on the movement of Jews in transit from northern Europe to the Americas and South Africa via the UK. Prof. Newman has kindly given permission for his paper to be included here.
Once again technology has proven to be my vanquisher and I have failed to find a way to reproduce the .PDF document without acquiring a severe headache, so I recommend you to follow the link below to read the paper “Trains and Shelters and Ships” in its original pristine and professional format.
As a preface: I investigated the reference to “Kahn” in the body of the text and that part of the narrative is unlikely to refer to our Victor (notwithstanding his position as an agent for Cunard Steamship). The Kahn mentioned is more likely to be based in London. That being said, the paper remains an informative and fascinating insight into the migration of families such as ours in the second half of the 19th century.
