Not for a first time I wonder what happened to Great-aunt Alice. She was sister to grandmother Amy Dubber, my father’s mother.
What we know is that Alice Rose was born on 4th November 1877 in Fulham and was baptised on 3rd February 1878 at St Saviour’s Church, Chelsea. Her parents were James and Kate (Catherine) Dubber. In 1881 Census she was age 3 and living in London with her family and 10 years later with her reduced family still in London. By 1901 she’d vanished.
No marriage record can be found; similarly no death record. As far as we know she’s not listed on any emigration passenger list. Ancestry.co.uk waves oak leaves at me but on investigation all hints of information seem to have been derived originally from my family tree, so offer nothing new.
Dubber is not a widespread name. Most spring from tap roots in Hampshire, with clusters in Bentley (where Alice’s father was born) and Portsmouth area. Links between both have been found, but they are indirect and vague, so verification is needed before we claim we’re all one big extended family. A heart-teasing moment was finding a record for Alice Rose Dubber dying at London’s Marylebone in 1894, but then her age was stated as 3, so was born around 1891, a coincidence of name but nothing else.
Whither Alice?
